The dean of libraries “loaned” me to UVA’s College of Arts & Sciences to help acclimate its large communications staff to a new dean and make that relationship productive. Besides an overall improving of the operation, we re-launched the College magazine, a color piece that mailed to more than 100,000 alumni. Working with Design Army, we dove deep into faculty research and teaching, paying particular attention to making the sciences enticing. The first issue triggered a $500,000 gift from an alum who said that he “finally understood what the College was about,” and the University continued its own coverage of faculty we’d featured. We did two issues that year.
